HAVE YOU HEARD OF METROLOGY?

by | Feb 2, 2022 | Cubiscan Products, Dimensioning

Metrology is all around us. You may not be familiar with it, but if you’ve ever used a gas pump, a bathroom scale, or a Cubiscan, you’ve interacted with it. In this blog, we’re going to provide information about why metrology matters for shipping. We’ll cover its role in dimensioning and how it serves as a guide for companies such as Cubiscan.

WHAT IS METROLOGY?
There’s probably a good chance you’ve never heard of metrology. To be honest, most of us here at Cubiscan (besides the engineering team) didn’t learn about it until we started working here. Metrology is the scientific study of measurement.

Sometimes it’s called measuring measurement. Metrology is the bedrock of dimensioning systems. Technological advancements lead to a deeper understanding of metrology. By understanding metrology, you’ll be better equipped to choose the best dimensioning system for your operation. You’ll be able to ask better questions and purchase the dimensioner you need.

METROLOGY DEVICES
As mentioned in the introduction, we all frequently interact with technology that uses metrology in some form. Metrology equipment ranges from basic things such as a bathroom scale to intricate technology such as the Cubiscan 325. Certain metrology devices are essential for warehousing and distribution operations. The three most crucial pieces of information for these operations are the dimensions, weight, and identification of SKUs. To marry those three things together, you need a multiple dimension measuring device (MDMD) along with a scale and a barcode reader. MDMDs are often referred to as dimensioning systems. Warehouse employees use most of these devices daily.

WHY DOES METROLOGY MATTER FOR DIMENSIONING?
As technology such as dimensioning systems advances, new doors open for metrology. These advancements change how we look at collecting measurements. In the past, knowing the dimensions and weight of large boxes was the main goal of most companies. Most items shipped from a warehouse to a brick-and-mortar store. Getting those items from the warehouse to the store was the only planning involved. Since that time, e-commerce popularity has exploded.

Consumers can now have items shipped directly to their front door. This means more trucks, boxes, and packing materials will be necessary. As we become more efficient, boxes will get smaller, more boxes will fit on a truck, and fuel consumption will be optimized. Having a deep understanding of metrology helps make every phase of the shipping process more efficient.

CONCLUSION
Metrology is the bedrock of dimensioning systems. As technology such as dimensioning systems improves, our understanding of metrology also improves. Better technology provides more accurate measurements. Measurements are crucial in our e-commerce dominated world. Having a solid understanding of metrology will help you choose the best dimensioning system for your operation. You’ll know what questions to ask to guide you to the best option available. Here at Cubiscan, we have a team of engineers always working to improve our current technology and bring new products to the market.

About Cubiscan

For over 30 years, Cubiscan has led the automated dimensioning industry. In the 1980s, it became clear that accurate dimensions and weight were essential for warehousing, distribution, right-size packaging, and freight-manifesting applications. By the mid-1990s, the company had established itself as an innovative supplier of static and in-motion dimensioning systems. Today, Cubiscan continues to innovate and guide its customers to effective material handling solutions by offering the broadest range of dimension-scanning technology available.
