How E-Commerce Fulfillment Centers Reduce Shipping Costs with Accurate Dimensioning

Jun 29, 2026 | Dimensioning

E-commerce fulfillment operates on thin margins at high volume. When every package ships, the declared dimensions determine whether the carrier charges based on actual weight or dimensional weight, whichever is higher. At scale, the difference between accurate dimensional data and estimated or outdated data shows up directly in shipping cost. Operations that measure accurately and declare correctly consistently pay less per package than those that don’t.

Dimensional weight pricing and what it costs when dimensions are wrong

Carriers calculate dimensional weight by multiplying length by width by height and dividing by a divisor (typically 139 for domestic parcel). If that calculated weight exceeds the actual weight, the carrier bills at the dimensional rate. If your declared dimensions are off by even a few inches on a package that ships thousands of times per month, the error compounds into a meaningful cost.

The inverse is also true: if your product database has dimensions that are larger than the actual package because they were entered from supplier specs or rounded up conservatively, you may be overbilling yourself on every shipment. Accurate outbound measurement captures the actual package size, not the spec or estimate.

Label accuracy and post-shipment billing adjustments

When a carrier receives a package and measures it, if the measured dimensions differ from the declared dimensions on the label, the invoice changes. That adjustment arrives after the shipment is delivered and the return window is open. At 500 or 1,000 adjustments per month across your parcel volume, the aggregate cost is significant.

In-motion dimensioning on the outbound line closes that gap by generating the label from the actual measurement rather than from a database record. The dimensioning system overview covers the range of systems designed for different outbound volumes and packaging mixes. For high-throughput SLAM line environments, the Cubiscan 200-SQ captures dimensions at conveyor speed and feeds the label generation step directly.

Polybags, mailers, and the measurement gap

E-commerce outbound is often dominated by polybags, mailers, and soft-sided packages that traditional dimensioners can’t measure reliably. These items deform when placed on a surface. They don’t have consistent edges for laser-based systems to detect. The result is that operations either skip measurement for that category, manually estimate dimensions, or use product database values that may or may not reflect the actual package.

The Cubiscan 75 Pro uses machine learning to measure polybags, flats, and irregular items accurately at workstation speed. For operations where a significant share of outbound volume is non-rigid packaging, that capability addresses a measurement gap that conventional systems leave open.

Cartonization and the cost of the wrong box

For operations using cartonization software to select boxes for multi-item orders, item master dimension accuracy is a prerequisite for the system to work. When item dimensions in the WMS are wrong, the cartonization engine selects boxes that don’t fit the items, produces oversized cartons that inflate dimensional weight charges, or generates packing configurations that damage product in transit.

Dimensioning at receiving, when SKUs first arrive, corrects this at the source. Cubiscan cubing software supports the data management layer that keeps dimensional records current and connected to the cartonization engine and WMS.

Returns and the measurement connection

Not all return reduction connects to dimensioning, but wrong-item returns and damage-in-transit returns both have dimensional data roots. A wrong item that makes it out the door often got there because a measurement or verification step was missed. A carton that arrives damaged may have been improperly packed because the cartonization recommendation was based on wrong dimensions. Accurate dimensioning at outbound, with a verification step, reduces the category of errors that trace back to measurement.

Find the right system for your fulfillment operation

Whether your operation runs a full SLAM line, a static workstation at pack-out, or both, the automated warehouse shipping solution page describes how the components fit together. To discuss which configuration matches your outbound volume and packaging mix, contact Cubiscan.

Frequently asked questions

How does dimensional weight pricing affect e-commerce fulfillment costs?
Carriers calculate dimensional weight by dividing the package’s cubic volume by a divisor and billing at whichever rate is higher: actual weight or dimensional weight. When declared dimensions are inaccurate, the billing is based on wrong inputs. Accurate outbound dimensioning ensures the declared data matches the actual package, reducing post-shipment billing adjustments.
Can dimensioning systems handle polybags and soft-sided e-commerce packaging?
Traditional dimensioners rely on detecting defined package edges, which polybags and soft-sided items don’t consistently provide. Machine learning-enabled systems such as the Cubiscan 75 Pro are designed specifically to measure non-rigid items accurately at workstation speed.
How does accurate item master data reduce cartonization errors in e-commerce fulfillment?
Cartonization software selects boxes based on item dimensions in the WMS. When those dimensions are accurate, the engine selects correctly sized cartons. When they’re wrong, the output is oversized boxes, packing failures, or configurations that don’t protect the product in transit. Accurate dimensions at the item master level are the upstream fix for cartonization performance.
What is the relationship between outbound dimensioning and returns reduction?
Some returns trace back to measurement gaps: wrong-item errors that a verification step would have caught, or damage-in-transit cases where cartonization selected the wrong box because item master data was inaccurate. Accurate outbound dimensioning with label verification reduces the subset of returns that originate from those measurement and packing errors.

About Cubiscan

For over 30 years, Cubiscan has led the automated dimensioning industry. In the 1980s, it became clear that accurate dimensions and weight were essential for warehousing, distribution, right-size packaging, and freight-manifesting applications. By the mid-1990s, the company had established itself as an innovative supplier of static and in-motion dimensioning systems. Today, Cubiscan continues to innovate and guide its customers to effective material handling solutions by offering the broadest range of dimension-scanning technology available.
